Minimum Auto Insurance requirements in all states

Every state requires us to carry auto insurance. Here is a list of the minimum auto insurance requirements in all states.

Alaska

  • $50,000 for bodily injury, per person
  • $100,000 for bodily injury per accident
  • $25,000 for property damage

Alabama

  • $25,000 for bodily injury or death per person
  • $50,000 total for bodily injury per accident
  • $25,000 for property damage

Arizona

  • $15,000 per person Bodily injury coverage
  • $30,000 total per accident
  • Property damage coverage: $10,000 per accident

Arkansas

  • $25,000 for bodily injury, per person
  • $50,000 for total bodily injury per accident
  • $25,000 for property damage, per accident

California

  • $15,000 for injury/death to one person
  • $30,000 for injury/death to more than one person
  • $5,000 for damage to property

Colorado

  • $25,000 per person for bodily injury
  • $50,000 per accident
  • $15,000 per accident for property damage
  • $5,000 Pip

Connecticut

  • $20,000 for bodily injury
  • $40,000 for bodily injury, total per accident
  • $10,000 for property damage per accident.

Delaware

  • $15,000 for injury or death per person
  • $30,000 for total injury or death, per accident
  • $10,000 for property damage, per accident.

The minimum limit requirements for PIP in Delaware are:

  • $15,000 for bodily injury to one person
  • $30,000 for bodily injury to multiple people involved in one accident.

PIP will also help pay up to $5,000 for funeral expenses.

Florida

If you are injured in an accident, your car insurance will pay your medical costs up to your policy’s limits, regardless of who caused the accident.

The minimum limits for Florida car insurance coverage are:

  • $10,000 of no-fault or personal injury protection (PIP) insurance
  • $10,000 of property damage liability (PDL) insurance.

Personal Injury Protection

PIP, insurance will also cover:

  • Your child and other members of your household
  • Your child (when he or she is riding on a school bus)
  • You (when you are a pedestrian or bicyclist involved in a car accident)
  • Passengers in your car who do not have their own PIP insurance and do not own a car

Georgia

  • Bodily injury liability: $25,000 per person
  • $50,000 per accident
  • Property damage liability: $25,000

Hawaii

  • $20,000 for bodily injury, per person.
  • $40,000 bodily injury per accident
  • $10,000 for property damage.
  • min PIP limit is $10,000

Idaho

  • $25,000 for bodily injury per accident
  • $50,000 for total bodily injury per accident
  • $15,000 for property damage

Illinois

  • $20,000 for bodily injury
  • $40,000 per accident
  • $15,000 for property damage

uninsured/underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage:

  • $20,000 per person
  • $40,000 total per accident

Indiana

  • Bodily injury per person $25,000
  • Bodily injury per accident $50,000
  • Property damage $10,000

Iowa

you do not have to buy car insurance, in the event of an accident, you have to show proof of financial responsibility immediately

Iowa SR-22 Insurance requirements

  • $20,000 for bodily injury per person
  • $40,000 for total bodily injury per accident
  • $15,000 for property damage

Kansas

  • $25,000 per person for bodily injury
  • $50,000 per accident for bodily injury
  • $10,000 per accident for property damage

Personal Injury Protection

  • $4,500 per person for medical expenses
  • $900 month for one year for disability and/or loss of income (for one year)
  • $25 per day for in-home services (for one year)
  • $2,000 for funeral, burial or cremation expenses
  • $4,500 for rehabilitation expenses

Uninsured/Underinsured

  • $25,000 per person
  • $50,000 per accident

Kentucky

  • $25,000 for bodily injury, per person.
  • $50,000 for total bodily injury, per accident
  • $10,000 for property damage
  • $10,000 Personal injury protection

Louisiana

  • $15,000 of bodily injury coverage per person
  • $30,000 of bodily injury coverage per accident
  • $25,000 of property damage coverage

Maine

  • $50,000 for bodily injury or death
  • $100,000 for total bodily injury  per accident
  • $25,000 for property damage
  • $2,000 Medical Payments
  • Mandatory uninsured motorist

Maryland

  • $30,000 for bodily injury
  • $60,000 for total bodily injury per accident
  • $15,000 for property damage.
  • Maryland minimum for PIP is $2,500

Massachusetts

  • Bodily Injury: $20,000 per person
  • $40,000 per accident.

Personal Injury Protection (PIP): $8,000 per person in an accident.

Bodily Injury Caused by an Uninsured Auto:

  • $20,000 per person.
  • $40,000 per accident.

$5,000 Property Damage per accident

Michigan

  • $20,000 for injuries or death to an individual
  • $40,000 for injuries or death per accident
  • $10,000 for property damage
  • $10,000 Personal Injury Protection

Minnesota

  • $30,000 for injuries per person
  • $60,000 for total injuries per accident
  • $10,000 for property damage

Minimum limits on your PIP:

  • $20,000 for medical coverage
  • $20,000 for loss of income

Mississippi

  • $25,000 per person for bodily injury
  • $50,000 per accident for bodily injury
  • $25,000 per accident for property damage

Missouri

  • $25,000 for bodily injury
  • $50,000 for total bodily injury
  • $10,000 for total property damage

Montana

  • $25,000 for bodily injury
  • $50,000 for total bodily injury of multiple people hurt in an accident
  • $10,000 for total property damage

Nebraska

  • Purchase a liability insurance policy
  • Obtain a certificate of self-insurance
  • Make a cash deposit with the State Treasurer
  • Obtain a surety bond with a company authorized to operate in Nebraska

Nevada

  • $15,000 of bodily injury coverage per person
  • $30,000 of bodily injury coverage per accident
  • $10,000 of property damage coverage

New Hampshire

  • $25,000 for bodily injury, per person
  • $50,000 for bodily injury
  • $25,000 for property damage.

Medical Payments

  • You must have at least $1,000 in medical payments coverage

New Jersey

Basic Policy

  •  $5,000 of property damage liability (PDL) per accident. This covers damage you may have caused to someone’s property in a car crash
  • $15,000 of personal injury protection (PIP) per person, per accident
  • Up to $250,000 for very severe injuries

NOTE: Bodily injury liability (BDL) coverage is not included in the Basic policy; however, policyholders are offered the option to purchase $10,000 of BDL coverage.

Standard Policy  

With the Standard policy, you get a minimum of:

  • $15,000 of bodily injury liability (BDL) insurance per person, per accident
  • $30,000 of BDL for multiple injured people per accident
  • $5,000 of PDL per accident
  • $15,000 of PIP per person in a car accident
  • Up to $250,000 of PIP for severe or permanent injuries.

New Mexico

  • $25,000 bodily injury per person
  • $50,000 bodily injury per accident
  • $10,000 for property damage

New York

Liability Insurance

  • $25,000 bodily injury
  • $50,000 per accident
  • $50,000 for death to one person
  • $100,000 for death to multiple people
  • $10,000 for property damage.

Liability does not cover your own personal costs.

No-Fault Insurance

New York also requires that you have no-fault coverage, which helps you with costs after an accident regardless of who was at fault.

New York basic no-fault coverage includes a limit of $50,000 per person to cover the following:

  • Your accident-related medical expenses
  • 80% of lost income due to injuries from a car accident, with a limit of $2,000 per month for up to 3 years
  • Up to $25 a day for expenses such as household help (for up to 1 year from the date of the accident)
  • A $2,000 death benefit on top of the $50,000 limit.

If your medical costs exceed your no-fault coverage limit, your health insurance will then kick in.

Uninsured Motorists Coverage

Uninsured motorists coverage

  •  $25,000 for injuries to one person
  • $50,000 for injuries to multiple people.

Uninsured drivers coverage will not cover property damage.

You also have the option of purchasing SUM (Supplementary Uninsured/Underinsured Motorists) coverage, based on the limits of your own policy, up to:

  • $250,000 per person, per accident
  • $500,000 per accident.

North Carolina

  • $30,000 for bodily per person per accident
  • $60,000 of bodily injury per accident
  • $25,000 of property damage per accident

North Dakota

  • $25,000―Per person
  • $50,000―Per accident for bodily injury
  • $25,000―Per accident for property damage
  • $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident-Uninsured motorist coverage
  • $25,000 per person $50,000 per accident-Underinsured motorist coverage
  • $30,000―Personal injury protection

Ohio

  • $25,000 for injuries or death, per person
  • $50,000 total for injuries per accident
  • $25,000 for property damage in an accident

Oklahoma

  • $25,000 for injuries
  • $50,000 total for injuries per accident
  • $25,000 for property damage in an accident

Oregon

  • $25,000 for bodily injury, per person
  • $50,000 for total bodily injury to others, per accident
  • $20,000 for property damage, per accident.

Your policy must include a minimum $15,000 of PIP coverage per person

The minimum requirements for uninsured motorist coverage are equal to that of the liability insurance minimums:

  • $25,000 per person
  • $50,000 per crash

Pennsylvania

Bodily Injury Liability:

  • $15,000 per person, per accident
  • $30,000 total per accident
  • Property Damage: $5,000 per accident
  • Minimum Medical Benefits coverage-$5,000

 Rhode Island

  • $25,000 per person bodily injury
  • $50,000 total per accident
  • $25,000 per accident Property damage
  • uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage equal to the limits of your liability coverage

South Carolina

  • $25,000 for bodily injury or death per person
  • $50,000 total for bodily injury or death per accident
  • $25,000 for property damage.

In South Carolina, you must have the following minimum uninsured motorist coverage:

  • $25,000 for property damage
  • $25,000 for bodily injury or death per person
  • $50,000 for bodily injury or death per accident

South Dakota

  • $25,000 for bodily injury or death, per person
  • $50,000 for bodily injury or death to multiple people in an accident
  • $25,000 for property damage

Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist

  • $25,000 for bodily injury, per person
  • $50,000 for total bodily injury, per accident

Tennessee

The required minimum limits of your liability car insurance are:

  • $25,000 for each injury or death per accident
  • $50,000 for total injuries or deaths per accident
  • $15,000 for property damage per accident

Texas

  • $30,000 for each injured person
  • $60,000 for injuries per incident
  • $25,000 for property damage

Utah

  • $25,000 for bodily injury per person, per accident.
  • $65,000 for bodily injury total per accident
  • $15,000 for property damage per accident
  • $3,000 Personal injury protection

Vermont

  • $25,000 for injury or death to one person in an accident
  • $50,000 for total injury or death if multiple people are hurt in the accident
  • $10,000 for property damage

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage:

  • $50,000 for bodily injury to one person
  • $100,000 for total injury if multiple people are injured or killed

Virginia

The following minimums apply to your liability coverage:

  • $25,000 for injuries per person per accident
  • $50,000 for total injuries per accident
  • $20,000 for property damage per accident.

Your uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage must match the minimums of your liability car insurance:

  • $25,000 for injuries, per person per accident
  • $50,000 for total injuries per accident
  • $20,000 for property damage per accident

Washington

  • $25,000 for injuries or death per person
  • $50,000 total for injuries or death per accident
  • $10,000 for property damage
  • $10,000 Personal injury protection

Washington D.C.

  • $25,000 per person, per accident for bodily injury
  • $50,000 per accident for bodily injury
  • $10,000 in property damage

In Washington D.C., you must have minimum uninsured motorist coverage of:

  • $5,000 in property damage, minus a $200 deductible
  • $25,000 per person, per accident for bodily injury
  • $50,000 per accident for bodily injury

West Virginia

  • $20,000 for bodily injury, per person
  • $40,000 for bodily injury, per accident
  • $10,000 for property damage.

Uninsured Motorist Coverage

  • $25,000 for bodily injury, per person
  • $50,000 for bodily injury, per accident
  • $25,000 for property damage

Wisconsin

  • $25,000 for injury or death, per person
  • $50,000 total for injury or death to multiple people in a single accident
  • $10,000 for property damage.

Uninsured & Underinsured Motorist Coverage

  • $25,000 for injuries per person
  • $50,000 for total injuries per accident

Wyoming

  • $25,000 for bodily injury per accident
  • $50,000 for total bodily injury per accident
  • $20,000 for property damage

Uninsured & Underinsured Motorist Coverage
