It’s quite simple really. You should see a doctor after a car wreck to prove your injury came from the accident. If you never see a doctor, or wait too long, you may not ever have any chance at recovering a settlement for your medical expenses. In order to prove your case, a lawyer needs Doctor documentation of an injury. If you never go see a doctor, you don’t have the documentation that is so critical for proving a case.
You could be hurt and not know it
I’m sure people read this and laugh. Insurance companies read it and don’t believe it. But the fact is, this is true. You could have injuries for which you feel no pain at all. Your pain may start the day, days, or even weeks after a car wreck. Your body may release endorphins and adrenaline after a car wreck.
This is your body’s natural pain killers at work. It is possible for you to be hurt and not even know it. Get to the doctor ASAP, if you are not injured at least you will have peace of mind, if you are injured, you can start your medical care ASAP and limit your recovery time.
Some injuries you may sustain that may not present themselves right away
It’s always clear if you have a broken bone, however it is not always clear if you have soft tissue injuries. If you go to the ER, chances are they will do X-rays and if they don’t see anything broken, they will cut you loose with prescriptions. Just because the emergency room sends you home, does not mean you are not hurt. Soft tissue injuries are not going to show up in X RAYS. Further diagnostic’s would be needed to see if you had sustained soft tissue injuries. Soft tissue injuries are not what the ER would consider life threatening issues.
Your primary care doctor may not see you even with health insurance
Many PC’s do not see accident victims, this is wide spread through many states, but in some areas they will. The number one reason we can find is that there billing structure will not allow them to do so. They will not take medical liens, pip, med pay, or do third party billing. Remember, they are use to billing health insurance companies, not auto insurance companies. If you do manage to see your PC, they may require you to pay for all your medical care cost up front. That’s not an option for many people.
Maybe this has happened to you. You have been in a car wreck, but you wait to see a doctor. You call an attorney and he won’t take your personal injury case because he sees a gap in your medical care or no medical care at all. The insurance company is going to look at this as well as a sign you were not injured in a car wreck.
However, that’s not saying you were not injured, but you have to look at it from their viewpoint. They may think you just got hurt from fixing your roof, not a car wreck. And, if you wait a month to seek medical care, that does not help you at all.
I don’t have any money to see a doctor after my accident
Having no money in order to seek medical care after an accident is not a viable excuse for the insurance company. They would rather you not seek treatment for an injury sustained in an auto accident. There are many options for you to receive proper medical care and not have to worry about who is going to pay the bill.
Your medical bills can be paid by a number of options
Med pay or medical payments is something you would have under your own insurance policy. It would cover you and anyone in your car that was injured up the amount that is specified under the policy. It may not count against you to use your med pay or medical payments in the event of an auto accident to pay for your medical care. Medical payments is generally something you have to ask for under you own policy, be sure to check your policy to see if you have medical payments. If you do not have medical payment it may be wise to talk to your agent and see what the cost would be to add it. You may be surprised how cheap it may be.
Pip or no fault
Personal injury protection or PIP– Pip is a lot like med pay, except it is mandatory. Some states throughout the country have PIP. A complete listing can be found here. Personal injury protection varies from state to state as to what it will pay for, however it will always cover your medical expenses after an auto accident for you and anyone in your car , no matter who was at fault.
Medical Lien-A medical Lien is no more than a document that states the Doctor will be paid by the patient or an attorney when the personal injury case has been resolved.
Third party billing
3rd Party Billing– third party billing is when the doctor will bill the insurance company directly. Although many patients use the term third party billing, not many doctors bill in this manner. Virginia has passed a law that Doctors can be reimbursed directly by the insurance company, however not many doctors use this method of recovering their fees. Dr. Leslie Holcomb has been treating accident victims for many years, she is the only doctor we know of who bills direct third party billing in VA.
If you have been injured in a automobile accident, don’t wait to see a doctor. Furthermore, don’t wait to hire an attorney before you see a doctor, that even looks much worse. You should go see a doctor after an accident to get checked out or because you are feeling immediate pain. We have doctor listed on our website that treat soft tissue injuries. However, they may also do third party billing, file for PIP, med pay, or may do a medical lien. If you have been injured and need a doctor contact us or search our database for one near you
